World Consumer Rights Day is observed annually on March 15 to raise awareness about consumer rights and promote fair trade practices. The day was inspired by U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s speech to Congress on March 15, 1962, in which he formally addressed consumer rights. The global observance was later established by Consumers International in 1983. The day is an opportunity to promote the basic rights of all consumers and encourage those rights to be respected and protected. World Consumer Rights Day, first observed in 1983, has become a key event for promoting consumer awareness.
Each year, a specific theme is chosen to address pressing consumer issues. The 2024 theme is "Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers,"focusing on ethical AI usage in businesses and consumer protection in the digital age. Key Consumer Rights can be enlisted in the form of eight fundamental consumer rights including:
1. Right to Safety– Protection from hazardous goods and services.
2. Right to Information – Access to accurate and truthful product details.
3. Right to Choose – Freedom to select from a variety of goods and services.
4. Right to Be Heard – Consumers' interests should be represented in policymaking.
5. Right to Redress – Compensation for faulty products or unfair treatment.
6. Right to Consumer Education– Knowledge to make informed decisions.
7. Right to a Healthy Environment – Protection from harmful production and trade.
8. Right to Basic Needs– Access to essential goods like food, water, and shelter.
Presently we need a lot of awareness programs and consumer right workshops so that every citizen understand about their consumer rights.
